What are stress and anxiety?

Any event that makes you feel frustrated, irritable or nervous can be categorized as stress whereas anxiety is a feeling of fear or worry. For instance, when you have a tight deadline and you notice that there is still plenty of work left, you experience a feeling of frustration and nervousness. This is known as stress.

But, let’s say you meet your deadlines and have actually done a great job. But there is still unnecessary worry that’s bothering you. You start to think maybe it’s not your best work or you simply ponder over it although everything seems fine. This is anxiety. Unresolved stress can also lead to anxiety. Therefore, it is always important to take care of your mental health.

10 Tips and Strategies for Managing Stress and Anxiety

Managing stress and anxiety doesn’t have to be taxing. It is one of those things that will offer you a break from your mundane tasks and help you focus on yourself. Take a look.

  1. Workout

You must have already heard about this a plethora of times but it is excruciatingly vital. When you work out, you release a chemical known as endorphins. These endorphins further interact with the receptors of your brain and exude positive feelings. It is always good to work out in morning as it sets the mood and energy for the day ahead.

If you are not a fan of exercise, you can always play your favourite sport or even go for a walk. Explore the area around your home and bond with nature early in the morning. This will also ensure you wake up early, which means, you will have more time for yourself to get ready, enjoy a hearty breakfast, and even spend time with your family.

  1. Practice deep breathing

When you feel too overwhelmed you can practice deep breathing to reduce unnecessary pressure. This will help you relax and calm yourself down. For this;

  • Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes

  • Just take slow and deep breaths

  • Focus on your breaths to calm your mind

  • Do it for 5 to 10 minutes

  1. Eat a well-balanced meal

Eating a well-balanced meal helps you control your moods and improve your health. Therefore, make sure you consume a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fibers, and protein in your diet.

  1. Learn to take a break

One of the reasons why we tend to experience too much stress and later anxiety is because we often forget to take a break. When you enjoy time with yourself, you will be able to enjoy your work and other aspects of life without any difficulty.

And when we say, take a break, it doesn’t have to be a long break. It’s just that you need to take a few minutes or an hour for yourself. Some of the things you can practice include;

  • Meditation

  • Yoga

  • Prayer

  • Listening to music

  • Spend time in nature

  1. Don’t let go of your hobby

One of the things we let go of as we enter adulthood is our hobbies. So, try to do something you love every day or at least once a week. Let’s say, you have always loved singing. But with work pressure, you haven’t been able to practice or just sing as much. Now, it’s time you got back to it.

You can practice your favourite song for a week and at the weekend, you can record a song. These small things can make a difference. Some of the relaxing hobbies include;

  • Reading

  • Knitting

  • Watching your favourite show or movie

  • Art project

  • Playing cards or board games

  1. Talk about things that bother you

Keeping your emotions bottled up only contributes to more stress and anxiety. Whenever something bothers you, always make sure you talk to someone about it. It can be a friend, a family member, or even a therapist. Talking about things that bother you can always help you out.

But let’s say there are a few things that you are not comfortable sharing with anyone. Well, in such cases, you can always journal.

Write down anything and everything that bothers you. You don’t have to filter anything out when you are journaling. Be open and be free. This will help you release the burden of your thoughts and help you reduce your stress.

  1. Drink green tea

When you feel highly stressed make yourself a cup of green tea. First, when you are making yourself a cup of tea and then sipping on it, you give your mind a break from the stress. You are now thinking of something else. And a warm drink is always relaxing. But, that’s not all. Green tea contains antioxidants, caffeine, as well as theanine, which is an amino acid that offers a calming effect.

  1. Laugh it out

When you laugh it out it releases endorphins and this helps enhance your mood and reduces stress. When you laugh, it tricks your nervous system into making you happy. So, what can you do? You can watch comedy movies or comedy shows to help you out.

  1. Always set realistic goals

One of the reasons why you become stressed or anxious is because you take too much on your plate. And when you are unable to complete your tasks, it stresses you out. So, what you can do here is set realistic goals for yourself.

For instance, when you are creating your to-do list make sure you only include tasks that can be realistically completed on that particular day. This will help you finish your chores within time and make you feel good and not stressed.

  1. Practice mindfulness

One of the things that can help you reduce stress is to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is when you are fully present and aware of that particular moment. So, when you focus on the present moment, you are able to give your best and prevent yourself from worrying about the future.
